Bendgate: iPhone 6 and now the Samsung S6?

With the looming release of the new Samsung Galaxy S6 many in our industry will be looking at the repairability factor when trying to examine this new smartphone. There was an article released today which reminds of us the notorious Bendgate when the iPhone 6 series was released just months ago. They go into detail with a video showing how under certain pressure tests, the S6 will bend and then break the LCD and likely internal components as well.

At our shop here in Redmond, iPhone 6 repairs are increasing steadily as we have clearly  noted the “bend” that affects many of our customers. This is generally due to people carrying there phones around either in their back pocket or in pockets which may be too tight. On a weekly basis we see iPhone 6 smartphones that are bent making replacing screens that much harder.

For those of you purchasing the new Samsung Galaxy S6 we cannot stress enough the need for a tough, resilient case. Bending of these phones will likely result in a expensive repair that could simply be avoided with a rigid case. We predict Samsung will issue the press releases negating Bendgate 2.0, but if real world tests are any indicator, these new generation of smartphones are indeed a delicate breed.
