Apple iOS update 8.3: wifi calling and other new feature
Apple recently made available iOS 8.3 to its repository and normally updates like these bring minor fixes and improvements. iOS 8 has been plagued with minor issues such as screen orientation, and wifi being inconsistent at times.
One of the most important updates to iOS 8.3 is the much anticipated addition of wifi calling. This has been a feature only enjoyed by T-Mobile USA customers on many of their handsets. Wifi calling allows you to enjoy reception in places where otherwise you might not have any coverage. For example, many homes with their concrete basements are abhorrent places for getting cell phone reception. With wifi calling, your network “coverage” is enhanced through wifi, giving you a digital cellular coverage in places where otherwise you would not.
The other advantage of wifi calling, is the ability to connect back to your home network while traveling abroad. When you are in your hotel in London, for example, you simply connect your iOS device the wifi and your phone will automatically connect to the home cellular network though a virtual VOIP service essentially. This can save hundreds of dollars in expensive roaming fees.
Keep in mind that wifi calling seems to be limited to the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5s, and 5c. Also your carrier can also override default settings and can choose not to allow wifi calling.
Another important update is the seamless integration with iCloud Photo Library. Those of you with new MacBooks or Desktops running Yosemite will enjoy this feature as its no longer in “beta”. OS X 10.10.3 included the Photos update so you can easily grab pictures from your mobile devices and vice-versa.
Apple also fixed the annoying orientation issue where your device might not recognize which way it was being held, thereby not correcting its view depending on which way the screen was turned.
