Sammamish Tidbits

Money Magazine has ranked Sammamish, Washington as one of the dozen best places to live among the communities in the United States that have a population of less than 50,000, in only ten short years. As of the census taken in 2001, the population of Sammamish was 45,780 people.

For the majority of its recorded history, the Sammamish Plateau was a portion of unincorporated King County. During the late 1800s, the first white pioneers arrived in the area and by the 1930s had established three resort areas. The plateau remained a primarily rural area until the 1970s, and the 1980s, when schools, shopping malls, and suburban homes were developed. In 1991, a vote to become part of the neighboring community of Issaquah failed, as well as a vote to incorporate the next year. In 1998, a newfound movement to establish a city, as the result of frustration with the county governments' development policies, finally achieved the approval of the voters.

This recognition and growth has occurred in a very short amount of time. If you are searching for a rapidly-growing community that has a great community feel, then relocating to Sammamish might just be a great idea.

In 2009, Sammamish celebrated its ten-year anniversary. The celebration served as a time to reflect on what makes the community of Sammamish such a dynamic and wonderful place to live. Sammamish started its journey in 1990, when the Sammamish Plateau was a portion of unincorporated King County. That same year, a vote was taken join neighboring Issaquah failed, and in 1991, it would also fail, again.

A few years passed and, in 1998, another movement to establish a city occurred. Then, the year 1999 brought the incorporation of Sammamish as a city, with the approval of the voters, and the city of Sammamish was born. The City Council realized that the key to the success of the city was growth, and during the next seven years, the development of subdivisions was slowed, in order for the growth to be sustained at a more reasonable rate.

During the last seven years, several key characteristics have changed that reflect the sense of community as well as the growth in Sammamish. Perhaps the most obvious piece of growth is the change of 228th Avenue to an arterial street in the city from a rural road. Miles of businesses, trails, lights, traffic lights, and sidewalks have constructed next to the Avenue, since it has become the central passage through Sammamish. There have also been other pieces constructed that reflect the growth of the community, such as the South Sammamish Park and Ride lot, as well as the flyover ramp over 520.

The expansion of its recreational areas and parks is another sign of the growth in Sammamish. When Sammamish was first established, there were only 40 acres of parks, However, through development, purchase, and donation, there are currently have an additional 420 acres of recreational areas and parks. This is one of the primary features that make Sammamish such a great place for community and family. There has also been the creation of a skateboard facility as well as many different ball fields. Soon a new library will be completed, which will also add to the community feel.

What makes Sammamish such a wonderful place to live and raise a family is this sense of community. Sammamish offers many different kinds of recreational opportunities, that include an amateur astronomy group, a ham radio group, The Heritage Society, CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), as well as the Sammamish Symphony. Events in the community that take place throughout the year include the summertime Shakespeare events and concerts at Pine Lake Park, Fourth on the Plateau, the Farmers Market as well as Teen Fest. The many different church groups and service organizations in the city have also done their part to make Sammamish a great place to live.

Planned to be located in the center of the community is the Town Center, which is next on the plate for Sammamish. This area will feature the natural beauty of the surrounding region while exuding an urban lifestyle. The center will include recreational facilities, trails, housing, as well as retail shops. A community and teen center is also in the planning stages to be developed. The center might well include a tennis facility, an indoor soccer field, a swimming pool, a computer lab, a recording studio, as well as a seniors area. The community of Sammamish has had ten great years of growth, and the newest community in western Washington State will be a thriving city for many years in the future.

A community of families is the vision of Sammamish. A combination of a suburban character with a small-town atmosphere, the community also enjoys a unique core of urban conveniences and lifestyles. The community is characterized by outstanding recreational opportunities, vibrant natural features, as well as high quality neighborhoods. There are many different gathering places in the community that offer numerous educational, cultural, and civic Residents are actively involved in the decisions that ensure a special sense of place as well as shaping the community.
